SOMERSET batsman Johann Myburgh has admitted it would be a “dream come true” to play in a Lord’s final after helping his side into the knock-out stages of the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The opener came into the team for the absent Dean Elgar against Gloucestershire and Essex and took his opportunity to impress against the latter, smashing a 28-ball 57 as he got Somerset’s ultimately unsuccessful run chase off to a flyer.

Speaking after that half century, he said: “I’ve not played in a Lord’s final before so it would be a dream come true to do so, and I really mean that,” he said.

“A lot of kids grow up dreaming of playing at Lord’s so if we can get there it would be fantastic.

“As a player you want to win trophies and the supporters want to see us win trophies, so that is our aim.”

Having been kept out of the early season matches by a virus, Myburgh hit a century for the Second XI before stepping up into the first team last week.

He knows what it takes to contribute in the Championship as well, but said his focus is largely on white ball cricket for the time being.

“At this stage I’ve only played one three-day game for the Seconds, but if there is a spot available I would love to play – if I stay in form it will look after itself,” he said.

“I’ve never hidden my love of white ball cricket and I’d love the opportunity to open in the T20 too.

“I’ve been patient so far and others have played really well in this competition – I was ill at the beginning of the season so missed out but I’ve had a chance and I’d love to keep playing through the knockout rounds.

“The squad is so strong here and there’s a lot of good players that don’t even make the squad, but ultimately I want to play everything.

“As much as you want to support those who are playing you want to contribute with match-winning performances, especially at my age – I’m not over the hill but I want to be involved as much as possible.”
