FOR the third instalment of our pre-season fan panel, we asked Sam Trego for his thoughts and predictions ahead of the 2017 campaign.

Sam is a lifelong Somerset supporter who also happens to be the brother of all-rounder Peter Trego - you can follow Sam on Twitter here.

What shape do you think Somerset are in ahead of the new season – are you optimistic?

I'm always optimistic! I think the side is in a great place for the start of the season. With Elgar adding some real steel at the top of the order along with such a powerful middle order of Hildreth, Trego, Davies and Gregory - and I'd add the Overtons into that - I don't see runs being a problem. The bowling unit looks strong with pace and three very good spinners in Van der Merwe, Bess and Leach.

The appointment of Tom Abell as captain - the right move?

Tom Abell was the correct choice as captain. James Hildreth would have been the natural choice but with it being his benefit year I think the management have chosen wisely. He has lots of experience to call upon with Tres, Tregs and Hildy.

What are your thoughts on Somerset’s new signings?

Dean Elgar is proven at Test level and will score runs, but the one that really excites me is Steven Davies. He has international class and can bat in all forms of the game, so should be a great signing.

Are there any areas of the side you feel should have been strengthened further?

My concern is when Elgar goes we will need an extra batsman to replace him. I would have liked to have seen one more quick bowler to back up the Overton twins but other than that we seem to have all bases covered.

Which young player(s) do you think can break through and play a part this season?

They have been there long enough but I'm hoping the Overton boys get a full season in without injury. If they do, they will make huge strides this season.

What would be your XI for the first match of the season against Essex?

Elgar, Trescothick, Abell, Hildreth, Davies, Trego, Gregory, C Overton, J Overton, Gronewald, Leach.
