SOMERSET’s new captain Tom Abell will be flying back home from Western Australia on February 26 but, before then, he has two more games to play for Freemantle, writes Richard Walsh.

In his latest message back from Perth, the 22-year-old said: "Having spent a couple of weeks back home over Christmas and New Year, I returned to Perth refreshed and looking forward to the second half of the season.

"We lost our unbeaten record to Claremont Nedlands in the first weekend back, the current leaders and Jim Allenby's club, so I was even more disappointing losing out to a team-mate!

"However, we have recently enjoyed real success at the club, culminating in winning the T20 competition which has been the highlight of my time out here.

"In a really tight game, we chased down Gosnells target of 170 with a ball to spare, prompting the whole club to run on and celebrate our first A grade flag for 26 years."

Captain Abell went on: "I am really happy with how my game is coming on.

"I've been working really week with Noddy Holder out here and have noticed significant improvements from last season which is exciting, and having the opportunity to put it into practice at weekends is perfect."

Looking ahead to taking up his new post with his home club, Abell said: "It is just under a month until I return home and am hugely excited about getting back to the club and starting pre-season with all the lads.

"I guess I will have a slightly different role this year but it's one I'm hugely excited about and will give everything towards.

"The players and coaches we have at the club give me huge reason for optimism and, with the announcement of Dean Elgar as our overseas [player], the squad is really taking shape.

"The season can't come around soon enough!"
