SOMERSET County Cricket Club's new captain Tom Abell is revving up for the start of the 2017 season back home and over the weekend played a starring role in the two games he played for Western Australian club Fremantle, where he is spending a second winter playing Grade cricket.

On Saturday the 22-year-old made 120 before being run out batting at No. 3 for Freemantle against Scarborough on the first day of a game played over two Saturdays.

The following day the young man the locals call ‘Mr Cricket’ was in action again for Freemantle in the final of the A Grade competition against Gosnells.

Abell, who was named as Man of the Match afterwards, firstly demonstrated his bowling ability by taking two for 22 from his four overs to help limit Gosnells to 169.

Batting at number 4 Abell then made 59 not out off 39 balls to steer steer Freemantle to a four-wicket win off the penultimate ball.

Abell will be returning later in February to start his first season as Somerset captain, and lead them on their pre-season training camp to Desert Springs in Spain.
