Perry Street League – Coronation Cup Final
Barrington 2, Beaminster 4

BARRINGTON’S wait to hold the Coronation Cup must go another year as they were beaten by league leaders Beaminster in this season’s final, at Axminster Town FC on Tuesday morning, writes Kerry Miller.

They can have no complaints as they shipped two goals around the half-hour mark and then could not make the extra man advantage tell after Shane Evans was sent off for a foul with almost half an hour to spare.

It was Beaminster’s first Coronation Cup success for more than 30 years and deprived Barrington of a cup double, as they took the Chard Hospital Cup back in August.

Evans twice blazed over when well placed early on, before Guy Dare and Bemmy keeper Simon Taylor collided, which meant a lengthy stoppage.

It enlivened the game and, on the half-hour, Gary Warren appeared to trip Russ Legg, and Rich Hebditch put Bemmy ahead from the spot.

Seconds later, Legg found himself in space on the left and his precise chip left Barrington keeper Stu Parris stranded.

After the break, Hebditch was wide with the first chance before Barrington wasted two free-kicks from just outside the box.

On the hour, Beaminster all but clinched the tie when Hebditch held off the defence and laid back for Tom Coggins to crash the third past Parris.

Barrington weren’t finished, however, as Tom Butler hit the bar with a header.

Minutes later they were handed a lifeline when Evans was sent off.

Sam Spurway was bundled over in the box shortly after, and James Thompson made it 3-1 from the spot.

Sadly for them, the opportunity to get back into the game was taken away five minutes later, when Sam Hodkinson’s attempted clearance looped over Parris for an own goal.

Andy Whitefield had the final word when he shot home from 12 yards to make it 4-2, which was the last meaningful action of a fine cup final.
