HOLYROOD Academy’s Under-13s girls football team competed in the Yeovil Town Regional Girls Cup Tournament against 16 teams representing schools from Somerset, Devon, Wiltshire and Dorset.

Holyrood won all their pool matches, beating Bucklers 4-0, Budmouth 3-0, Blue School 2-1, and Selwood B 7-0 and qualified top of the group for the quarter-finals.

In the quarter-final Holyrood met Selwood A team; Holyrood proved too strong and ran out 7-0 winners.

In the semi-final, Holyrood met their group opponents Budmouth once more and a tense game wasn't resolved until the second half when three quick goals for Holyrood saw them reach the final.

The final was against a very strong and previously high-scoring Preston team.

The game was competitive throughout, with chances for both sides, with the Preston goalie making a number of one-on-one saves.

The second half began with Preston on the offensive and Tierney Freer in the Holyrood goal making an outstanding double save to keep the scores level.

Then, in the last five minutes, Katie Beale broke free twice to slot home two goals, securing a well-deserved victory for Holyrood.

Katie Beale was awarded player of the tournament, finishing with 12 goals.

As tournament winners, Holyrood go forward to represent Yeovil Town at the Regional finals in 2017.

Holyrood sport development manager Rich Evans said: "It was a fantastic effort from all the girls.

"They played excellent football and supported each other brilliantly.

"We are really looking forward to representing Yeovil Town in the next stage of the competition."
