SOMERSET director of cricket Matt Maynard says he is satisfied with his side's preparations for the new season, despite seeing rain wash out a large proportion of this week's friendlies.

Somerset's two-day friendly against Worcestershire was abandoned without a ball being bowled, while two Twenty20 fixtures against Gloucestershire suffered a similar fate - but Maynard says he has been impressed with his player's work rate off the field.

He said: “We can't control the weather which has cost us the game with Worcester and the T20s against Gloucestershire.

"However, what has impressed me is the way that the players have worked their socks off having come back indoors for the first time, helping each other out and developing each others games, so I am really pleased with that side of things.

“It's looking really good from my perspective and hopefully the weather looks a bit better for later this week in Cardiff and its important we make the most of the days that we are there.”

In just over a week’s time, Somerset begin their 2015 season in earnest when they take on Durham in the County Championship on April 10 - but before then, they have two more three-day warm up games, the first of which is against Glamorgan starting today (Thursday) at the SWALEC in Cardiff.

They then host newly-promoted Lancashire on Monday at Taunton Vale.

Somerset enjoyed the best of their drawn three-day match against Gloucestershire last week, which included 95 for Marcus Trescothick, and half centuries for Tom Abell, Jim Allenby and James Hildreth, along with a four-wicket haul from Craig Overton.

Somerset squad to play Glamorgan, starting today (Thursday): Chris Rogers (capt), Tom Abell, Jim Allenby, Tom Barber, Ryan Davies (wkt), Lewis Gregory, Tim Greoenewald, James Hildreth, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Pete Trego, Marcus Trescothick and Max Waller.
