SOMERSET have just launched their Potential Somerset Player Programme (PSPP) in an effort to create a working link between the County Ground and the most talented young cricketers across the region.

Jason Kerr, head of talent development and assistant coach at Somerset said: “We looked at what we are already delivering through the Academy, the Emerging Player Programme (EPP) and the Age Group system and felt that we needed another layer.

“This is bridging a gap and building a much closer relationship with the minor counties, in particular Cornwall and Devon where we can work with the player on both programmes.

“The PSPP gives the players more contact time so from a relationship and coaches point of view we know what Cornwall and Devon are delivering on their programmes, and we know what we are delivering on ours so this makes it a much more cohesive pathway throughout the south west.

“In practical terms the minimum amount of time that any young cricketer on the PSPP can expect is eight Sunday sessions with the Academy and age groups, with the programme being led by Paul Tweddle.

“This is a really exciting development and we kicked it off last Sunday.

"It was fascinating to see the intensity with which the programme was delivered and the ways in which the guys involved responded to the environment was brilliant."

Kerr added: “The PSPP group have also seen the way that the Academy operate as well and that will give them a target to aim for and we are really excited by the four who are on the programme.”
