TWO youngsters from Chard ABC gained valuable experience when they boxed at a show held by Boscombe ABC in Dorset on Saturday.

Twelve-year-olds Mitchell Ayres and Fire Verk both lost their bouts in front of a very lively and partisan crowd.

But they both did enough to demonstrate plenty of potential.

Ayres faced a very tough boxer from City of Portsmouth ABC.

Although his overall boxing ability was clearly more rounded and slick, it was the Portsmouth fighter’s overall determination and seeming lack of fear that secured a close but unanimous decision from the judges.

Verk was also involved in a close bout againts his opponent from Guildford but was again impressive with a fine display of composure, movement and overall ring craft.

Ultimately he succumbed to a split decision against him based on his opponent’s more assertive strategy.

Chard head coach, Keith Roberts, said: “Unfortunately for our guys we came up slightly short against a determined duo of fighters and a very partisan crowd.

“We know what to do in the future and all these experiences can only serve to help better their skills and do better next time around.

“In fact I believe that Fire is getting closer to being in championship contention form some time next season.”
