CHARD were swept away by a bigger and faster Old Redingensians side when they lost 64-7 in National league 3 on Saturday.

In the first half the wind was very strong, blowing end to end, with Chard forced to battle against it. It was blowy enough to make kicking out of defence pointless.

The first ten minutes was all Reading on the attack. Chard defended well but the home side had a slight edge in the scrum and it wasn’t long before Chard gave away a penalty at scrum which was kicked.

Two mins later, following a scrum on half way, Reading worked set move to the left wing where the fastest player on the pitch sped over for a try which was converted Two minutes later the same winger but through but Helliar’s last-gasp tackle stopped the score.

Chard then had a good period, with several phases setting up a scoring chance. Unfortunately a forward pass prevented them scoring.

On 20 minutes Chard attacked but Douglas was isolated in midfield, there was a turnover, and Reading went over for a converted try.

Then six minutes late Douglas received a yellow card for deliberate knock on trying to intercept.

Soon afterwards Chard kick out of defence but didn’t find touch. The home side created an overlap and score under posts for 24-0.

Four minutes before half time saw the best try of game from a scrum on half way.

It was a simple backs move but every pass was spot on and at great pace.

Two minutes later a Chard line-out in their own half was overthrown and Reading had an easy run-in to leave the half-time score 38-0.

Chard start second half without their best player, Burnell, who was having treatment on the side lines.

Two minutes after the break Reading’s man of the match at inside-centre off-loaded in the tackle and their No8 ran in under the posts.

Then came Chard’s only joy of the match. Following good pressure and a line-out in the corner, they drove towards the line for a score by Ben Robinson converted by Lawton.

Soon afterwards a great run from Burnell saw him break several tackles but he was unable to get his pass away.

All substitutes were now on the pitch with Biss and Gosden replacing Hyslop and Henley and Selway on wing.

Chard never stopped trying but were punished for every mistake.

Reading had a good game plan and players in the right positions to make it happen. Their backs were superb.

Chard just about held their own in the forwards but were ripped apart outside.
