McKINLAY’S 1st Chard Wheelers host the next round of the South-West cyclo-cross championships this Sunday.

A club spokesman said: “ We are very grateful to Holyrood Academy for allowing us use of their playing fields for the event, which is raced over tarmac, grass, mud and various obstacles, both natural and man-made.”

Several Chard riders are performing well in the series so far.

Gavin Richards has taken some great results in the men’s veteran races, while his son Evan, along with Max Hinds and Max Taylor, have been doing well in the various youth categories.

The youth and junior riders of McKinlays 1st Chard Wheelers continue to impress with their determined and skillful riding and top level results.

Junior rider (U-18) Rob Hogg took two second places, two thirds and a fourth against some of the best track riders in southern Britain in the ‘A’ league, with some top riding and ferocious sprints.

Under-12 Evan Richards, who trains with the Welsh development squad, took a very well ridden victory in the points race and also a solid fourth place in the ‘C’ league.

Another top performance came from Rowan Ellis in the ‘C’ league.

He took two wins and three seconds on one night for a very impressive total and must be in contention for a medal at the end of the league.

n Chard Wheeler Barrie Carter will be hosting his annual ‘Bike Jumble’ event at Broadway village hall this Saturday from 9.30am.

The jumble is a social occasion and opportunity to buy or sell anything bike-related.
