CHARD Town lost 1-0 at home to Cheddar in division one of the Toolstation Western league on Saturday.

Cheddar came close to opening the scoring in the second minute as Callum Ham lifted the ball over the Chard defence only to see his effort rebound to safety off the top of the bar.

Five minutes later, the same player sped past Leigh Bailey before sending in a thunderous shot from the edge of the area that went inches high of its mark.

The home side began to create a few chances of their own with Andy Martin slamming a shot against an upright and Ben Haines speculative effort being turned behind by keeper Jason Woodcock.

From the resulting corner, Martin was once again unlucky to see his strike rebound off the upright.

In the 22nd minute Sam Clark brought a good save from the visitors gloveman, who dived to his left before flicking the ball around the base of the post and minutes later Clark again tested Woodcock with a flashing header.

The first half ended with Oscar Latas sending in a shot that went narrowly wide.

After the interval, both teams created chances but failed to get the decisive touch that would give them the lead.

Cheddar finally made the breakthrough in the 65th minute when a cross from Sam Jones was met by George Booth who hammered a right footed shot past Nathan Whatley.

The home side did their best to get back into the game with Bailey and Clark both bringing good saves from Woodcock.

Just before the final whistle, Jamie Underwood’s long throw-in was flicked on to Clark, who’s weak effort went straight into the keepers arms and with it went the last chance of a Chard equaliser.
