McKINLAYS 1st Chard Wheelers incorporated a visit to Yeovil CC’s annual Open Hill Climb event in their weekly club run.

Several Wheelers took part while their clubmates cheered them on.

The tough climb up to High Ham, near Langport always attracts large numbers of riders and is a great social event for cyclists as well.

Former Wheeler George Fowler won the overall timed event and set a new course record.

The top current Chard rider was Andy Mapson, who was the club’s own hill climb champion two years ago.

Rex Facey also maintained his great hill climbing form with a top ten finish overall and was top veteran.

This follows his recent hill climb (vet) win at Porlock in West Somerset.

Chard Wheelers are hosting their own hill climb event at Yarcombe on Sunday, October 19.

It will be immediately followed by the club’s AGM at Yarcombe village hall.

At the recent Youth inter-regional championships, held in Essex, the South-West boys team rode strongly throughout.

Ryan White rode well over the various events but the team’s chances of success were severely handicapped by an early crash and injury to one of the team’s best riders.

The girls team, containing Emily Attfield and Ruby Bond, finished second overall however.

This was the South-Wests best-ever result in these championships.

Attfield and Bond rode very strongly over the three days and both helped team-mate Lauren Dolan to victory in the final race.
