REX Facey’s hilly training schedule paid dividends as he climbed to victory in the veteran men’s event at the massively popular Porlock Toll Road Hill Climb.

His McKinlays 1st Chard Wheelers clubmate, John Kettel, was also in excellent form, finishing third.

And Wiebke Rietz secured fifth in the Ladies event.

As usual the race attracted a large, quality, field and the stiff extended climb was conquered in some very quick times.

Martha Beacham also rode the Ladies event and put in a great effort.

Beacham has been developing quickly as a racer this year and has gained two top four finishes in Ladies races at Westpoint, Exeter and at Dunkeswell.

She said: “I’m delighted that I’m still in one piece and I didn’t finish last.”

Max Hinds was selected to represent the South-West region in mountain bike racing at Hadleigh Farm in Essex.

He rode brilliantly over several different disciplines at the Olympic venue to help the region to sixth place overall, their best ever result.

Several Wheelers took part in Yeovil CC’s annual Open 10 mile Time Trial from Podimore to Tintinhull and back along the A303 on Saturday.

Some excellent times were recorded despite a deceptive easterly breeze.

Top Wheeler was Tom Aliban who recorded 21ms 20s. He was closely followed by Justin Dance in 21m 29s, a personal best time.

Rob Hogg with 21m 34s was followed by Oli Cooper who stopped the clock at 22m 13s, another personal best.

Other new marks were set by 15-year-old Ryan White (22m 43s) and Ben Moran (23m 07s).

Dean Ward logged a time of 23m 10s just ahead of Nigel Ware on 23m 16s and Buster Lawrence on 23m 26s.

This was a season’s best time for Lawrence.

John Trout, who is in his 70s, put in a great ride and rolled back the years by recording 26m 49s – one of his best times for several seasons.
