SOMERSET have announced that three former Academy players - Tom Abell , Jack Leach and Craig Meschede - have all signed new contracts along with Johann Myburgh.

Taunton born Abell, who is 20, is an exciting new talent and made his debut last month, scoring 95 in his first innings against Warwickshire.

Left-arm spinner Leach is another local boy who plays his club cricket for Taunton Deane.

The 23-year-old made his debut in 2012 and last season topped the bowling averages. He has produced some impressive returns in the 50 over competition this year.

All rounder Meschede, who is 22, played through the Somerset age groups and made his senior debut in 2011 since when he has produced a number of match-winning performances, particularly in one-day cricket.

Myburgh, 33, joined Somerset at the start of this season and has shown himself to be a versatile player, whether batting in the middle order or opening the innings. In addition his off breaks have brought variety to the attack.

Meanwhile 23-year-old James Burke, who signed a summer contract at the start of the season and has appeared in three T20 matches is leaving to join Surrey for 2015.

Chief executive Guy Lavender said: “We are delighted that Tom Abell, Jack Leach. Craig Meschede and Johann Myburgh have signed new contracts.

“The three youngsters have all come through our own youth system and joined the club from the Academy, while Johann has proved himself to be a valuable asset and a great clubman during this year.”

“We are sorry to be losing James, but wish him well for the future with his new club.”
