JAMES Hayter, aged 10, of Devon, was named as a winner in the Match Day reporter competition run by Somerset County Cricket Club and the County Gazette. He scooped a media pass and tickets for three friends to Friday’s Natwest T20 Blast match against Glamorgan. Here’s his match report.

ALL-ROUNDER Peter Trego was unable to give himself an early birthday present as he top-scored with 94 not out for Somerset to help them get within eight runs of victory in the NatWest T20 Blast against Glamorgan last Friday.

Glamorgan captain Jim Allenby won the toss and chose to bat first where he was joined at the crease by Jacques Rudolph.

By the time Rudolph was dismissed brilliantly by Peter Trego with an amazing catch, he had scored 40 off 36 balls and had hit three fours as well as one six - thanks to an amazing reverse sweep.

When Chris Cooke came in he scored 18 quick runs off 10 balls, including two fours and one six. Next up was Darren Sammy who only hit three runs off eight balls and broke his bat.

That meant Somerset were chasing a target of 177 and Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter opened the batting.

Trescothick nicked it to the keeper for four before Trego arrived to lead the charge, staying the middle until the end of the innings and smashing 11 fours and two sixes.

With Kieswetter going for an uncharacteristic one, Alviro Petersen came in and scored 34 off 21 balls. He was caught brilliantly by Dean Cosker.

James Hildreth scored 33 before trying to whack it for six but was caught on the boundary.

Despite the best efforts of Trego, who turns 33 on Thursday (June 12), Somerset lost by seven runs.

After the match Trego said the pitch could be like a tennis ball bounce and that Michael Hogan bowled an astounding 19th over, conceding just four runs leaving the Cidermen needing 27 of the last six balls.

Somerset’s next home match is on Friday (June 13) against Hampshire – get down there to see some more big sixes!
