JUNIOR Rob Hogg produced a superb ride to finish second in McKinlays 1st Chard Wheelers’ Open 10 mile Time Trial.

The 16-year-old recorded a very swift 20m 59s over the course from Feniton to Honiton and back and was only beaten by Robin Comber of Revo racing.

Hogg’s peformance followed close on the heels of an excellent top ten place in the Team Tor 2000 series.

Over 20 Wheelers entered the time trial which attracted a strong field of 55.

George Fowler was second home for the hosts in 22m 10s, followed by Dave Moffett in 22m 37s.

Another junior (Under-18) rider, Oli Cooper, stopped the clock at 23m 55s while the top Under-16 was Ryan White with a personal best of 24m 19s.

‘Buster’ Lawrence clocked 24m 27s with Dave Lane on 24m 28s and Andy Fowler on 24m 31s. Wiebke Rietz was third placed woman on 26m 20s and Under-16 Emily Attfield finished fourth only to discover that she had a slow puncture and her tyre was almost flat at the finish.

Several other Wheelers had mechanical mishaps with Dean Ward faring worst having written off a racing wheel on a pothole.

n The Totnes -Vire 2 day Stage race took place at the weekend with three stages of racing around the roads of Devon.

Fowler, the Wheelers’ in-form Category 2 racer, took on the best Category 1 and Elite riders from all over the south and west.

A 90 kilometre race on Saturday with a three mile Time Trial and a 100k leg on Sunday made up the racing schedule.

It was tough racing on back-to- back days, particularly with the atrocious conditions on Saturday.

But Fowler put in a gutsy ride to finish the first day in the top 15 and took eighth in the Sunday morning Time Trial.

The third stage was dominated by a six man breakaway of which Fowler was a member.

Fowler, who has been working on his finish, led out the sprint from 300 metres and just kept going.

He took the stage victory in style and secured seventh overall for one of his best results to date. n The first round of the Team Tor 2000 summer series took place at Merryfield near Ilminster and the strong Wheelers contingent was among the honours.

In the seniors Category 3 race, Rob Hogg’s father Sean put in a great performance to take fifth place and Paul Barrat gained a very respectable ninth position.

Rob raced in the Elite/1st/2nd Category event and secured an excellent top ten position against the top riders from the south and west of England, several of whom are professionals.
