CREWKERNE Town beat Beaminster 4-1 to lift the Perry Street league’s Challenge Cup on Friday.

Crewkerne had the better of the opening exchanges and came close to opening their account in the second minute when Jak Flatt put a shot inches wide of the upright.

Further efforts by Jamie Spurdle and Brad Miles failed to find their mark, while a header from Pete Symes ricocheted off the bar.

But the pressure paid off in the 38th minute as Spurdle rose above the Beaminster defence to send a glancing header past Adam Herring to put Crewkerne ahead.

However, the advantage was short-lived as five minutes later Murray Legg levelled as he steered the ball inside the upright following a corner.

The Dorset side came more into the game after the interval and almost went ahead when Ali Bowyer forced Dale Wood into making a fine save.

Play moved from end to end before the town side regained the lead in the 71st minute through Dave John. Soon after he doubled the advantage with his second goal of the afternoon.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Spurdle completed the scoring to give Crewkerne their first victory in the competition for 25 years.

In the closing minutes Beaminster pushed men forward in an attempt to reduce the arrears, but the Crewkerne defence, well-marshalled by their captain Jason Manley coped with everything that came their way.
