AFTER the postponement of the Stableford qualifyer on Monday, due to heavy rain, 33 Seniors gathered at Windwhistle Golf Club for the three-man Bowmaker tournament on Wednesday.

Despite the benign conditions, the teams found difficulties around the greens, and the points scoring was low, with only three teams scoring above 70.

Colin Ireland led his team into the clubhouse having achieved a modest total of 76 points which was enough to win, beating Robin Flower’s trio by two points.

Results: 1 Colin Ireland; Bob Barrow & Richard Forster 76 pts; 2 Robin Flower; Bert Robinson & Brian Anderson 74; 3 Bim Morfitt; Des Denning & John Lyford 71.

On Thursday, the match team travelled to Wheathill in search of their first victory.

Captain for the day, Stuart Pope, led by example and, with his partner, recorded a win in the first game.

This was followed by a win in game two with Alan Chance and Ian Fielder inflicting a heavy defeat on their opponents.

Then the tide turned as the hosts won the next three games, meaning the result depended on the final pairing.

This game went to the final hole which was eventually won by the hosts, and the match was lost by 4-2.

Results: Stuart Pope & George Willerton beat Thorley & Stirling by 2 & 1; Alan Chance & Ian Fielder beat Williams & Overland by 8 & 6; John McOmish & Barry Singleton lost to Frith & O'Neill by 6 & 5; Gordon Stone & Gordon Bareham lost to Bradley & O'Connor by 2 & 1; Alan Dowley & Keith Harper lost to Davenport & Underwood by 1 hole; Mike Light & Dickie Hall lost to Bowen & Berry by 1 hole.

On Friday, a field of 52 Seniors entered the April stableford qualifyer.

With the course playing long from the white tees, scoring was always going to be difficult and with no player recording a par score, the competition was reduced to a reductions only event.

In Division 1, Trevor Dobson recorded the best score with a 2 over par, 34 points.

There was a three-way tie for second place with John Andrew taking the honours with a better back 9.

A similar score was recorded in Division 2 with Dickie Hall beating Fred Oliver by virtue of a better back 9, both players scoring 33 points.

Results: Division 1 – 1 Trevor Dobson (34), 2 John Andrew (32), 3 Barrie Heath (32), 4 Danny Dowell (32); Division 2 – 1 Dickie Hall (33), 2 Fred Oliver (33), 3 Roger Withers (31), 4 Nick Hill (30)
