WINDWHISTLE Seniors suffered a narrow defeat in the first round of the Somerset Bowl on Friday.

The club took five strong teams to Mendip Springs to take on Farringdon in a foursomes format.

The contest started in atrocious conditions which abated after the first few holes.

The clubs were evenly matched with Windwhistle recovering from two defeats to draw level at 2-2.

But a loss in Game 5 gave the round to Farringdon 3-2.

Results: Game 1 – Norman Markby & Bert Robinson lost to Waller & Thain 3&1, Game 2 – Alan Chance & Barrie Heath lost to Thompson & Simmons 6&4, Game 3 – Danny Dowell & Maurice Arnold beat Standen & Stevebrook 2&1, Game 4 – Adrian Wells & Ian Fielder beat Macintyre & Simms 3&1, Game 5 – Bob Barrow & Frank Martin lost to Siddon & Hedges 5&4.

A busy week for the Seniors started on Monday with the bi-annual match with the ladies section.

The event comprises of two men and a lady forming a team, playing the best out of two to score.

With 15 holes to be played, the bench mark was a score of 60 points, and out of ten teams, seven managed to achieve this score.

A fine round by the trio led by Ladies Captain, Jan Wilkes saw them leaders in the clubhouse on 65 points.

This led the field until the end when Paula Bowles led her team in with 67 points.

The captains of both sections thanked the participants for their generosity in raising the sum of £150 for their respective charities.

Result: 1 Paula Bowles, Mike Light & John Pearce 67pts; 2 Jan Wilkes, Bill Hilson & Alan Davis 65pts.

On Wednesday 36 members travelled to Wales to take part in the first round of the Challenge Cup played at the St Pierre Club.

Despite a misty start to the day, the weather improved, and conditions made for some good scoring.

The top ten players in this competition are awarded points which are taken forward to the next round.

Fighting off challenges from Danny Dowell and Alan Chance, there was no doubt about the winner, with Adrian Wells scoring a very fine 38 points.

Result: 1 Adrian Wells 38pts, 2 Alan Chance 36pts, 3 Danny Dowell 35pts.

On Thursday, the match team travelled to Dorset to take on a very strong Bridport side.

The match began in very cold conditions with heavy sleet and rain.

The conditions subsequently cleared, and the second nine holes were played in sunshine.

This, however did not see an improvement in the golf, and Windwhistle crashed to a 6-0 defeat.

Credit must go to three teams, all of whom ended in defeat at the final hole.

These games could have gone either way so Bridport were somewhat flattered by the scoreline.
