GOLF: Windwhistle B team off to a flyer
5:00pm Monday 24th March 2014 in Sport
WINDWHISTLE B made an excellent start in division four of the Avalon league with a 4½-½ win over Taunton and Pickeridge Stags.
Captain Andy King was delighted with his team who picked up 11 points out of a possible 12.
Windwhistle C team kicked off their Avalon league campaign with an exciting 3-2 win away to Wheathill B in division seven. This was the first time in three years the C team have won their first league match.
Best performance came from Mickey Hearn and Ian Housham who won 3& 2. All other games were won and lost on the 17th green A total of 42 Windwhistle Seniors attended the St Patrick’s Day team Stableford competition last Monday.
The fine conditions enabled the 14 teams to produce some good golf.
The format, which included the proviso that all team members had to score on six holes, reduced the target to around the 80 mark.
Teams led by Bernie Skeels and Keith Potter made the vanguard, with nothing separating them until the final two holes when birdies by Geoff Dean made the difference. Potter’s team finished with an accomplished 81 points, three ahead of their nearest rivals.
A strong finish by Mike Light’s trio saw them level in second place having finished with four birdies and an eagle.
Result: 1 Keith Potter, Geoff Dean & Mike Burt (81pts); 2 Bernie Skeels, Jerry Stephens & Alan Dowley (78pts); 3 Mike Light, Brian Anderson & Gordon Alloway (78pts).
On Wednesday the Seniors played host to the penultimate round of the winter league’s pairs competition.
In a cool wind with a hint of sunshine, the 21 teams enjoyed the conditions with no less than eight pairings achieving scores in the 40s.
A close contest ensued between Chris Denman’s duo and that of Brian Anderson, both returning the same score of 43 points, which was a fine achievement with teams playing off 3/4 handicap.
Both these scores were surpassed near the end of the day when captain Alan Davis and Bert Robinson returned a score of 45. This was achieved with the help of a gross par score on the back nine.
Result: 1 Alan Davis & Bert Robinson (45pts), 2 Geoff Dean & Brian Anderson (43pts), 3 Chris Denman & Bill Hilson (43pts).
The Seniors rounded off the week on Friday with the Captains Charity Greensomes. The 25 teams consisted of high/low handicap pairings with players taking alternate shots after teeing off.
Result: 1 Fred Oliver & Dave Goddard 44pts, 2 Sid Crisp & Tony Stenhouse 41pts, 3 Brian Anderson & Bert Robinson 40pts.
After the competition captain Alan Davis thanked all participants for their support for his charity, Prostate Cancer UK, and was delighted with the response from members. Including the receipts from a raffle they raised £392.
