A TRIO of riders from McKinley’s 1st Chard Wheelers got into a substantial breakaway in the fourth round of the Kalas winter league at Merryfield on Sunday.

The break in the Category 3/4 race was large enough to last right through the race with Chard’s Rob Hogg securing victory after a very impressive ride.

Hogg has also regained the yellow jersey as overall series leader and with just one round to go, in March, a series win is very much on the cards.

Clubmate Jacob Board took second place while George Fowler scored another great top ten finish.

This was a tremendous result for the club against a large, quality field from all over the South and West.

The success achieved in the Newport velodrome winter league pre-Christmas, has been continued into the track spring league.

The club’s youth and junior riders have once again been prominent on the podium.

One of the highlights was a recent first and second in an elimination race in the C division. Joe West and Emily Attfield dominated the race and contested the result between themselves with West a narrow victor.

Rowan Ellis has also been improving in this section as his experience and strength grows.

Ryan White is gradually coming back to full fitness after his collar bone break and is getting sharper by the week in the B league.

The A division is now a serious level of track racing with several past national and world champions, many top junior riders and some potential Olympic riders contesting the weekly league.

Board and Hogg ride in this division and have gained several top three finishes.

The club has arranged Saturday morning youth training sessions at RNAS Merryfield on February 22 and March 1. For full details contact Brandon Ellis on 01460-221479.
