CHARD B won 4-2 at Bridgwater D 4-2 in South East 3 of the Davis Wood league.

The opening half of this encounter was played in appalling weather conditions with sleet and high winds resulting in a lot of cold bodies and slippery stick handles.

Bridgwater fielded a much-changed team from recent encounters and it was the visitors that had the upper hand in the early encounters.

Using both wings well, they created a number of half chances with Andy Swain going close before two goals came in quick succession.

First Adam Veitch set up Duncan Lewis then Lewis found debutant James Float who was quickest to the ball and squeezed his shot past the advancing keeper.

With Chard two up they relaxed slightly and poor marking at the top of the D saw Bridgwater pull one back.

Happily for all concerned the sun came out as the second half started and Bridgwater pressed for the equaliser.

Chard stood up to the pressure and counter-attacked well with Nathan Johnson, Veitch and Float marauding at pace against a sluggish defence.

The turning point of the game came when Berge Balian somehow got his leg up to his chest to make a remarkable save which deflated the Bridgwater attackers.

Chard scored twice more in quick succession through Swain and Fraser Lewis to put the result beyond doubt.

Bridgwater continually changed their formation but their tactic of long, hopeful hitting caused the Chard defence few problems.

It was not until the last minute that a goalmouth melee resulted in the ball in Chard’s net as the defence waiting for a whistle.
