WINDWHISTLE’S Senior Section held their annual Christmas Cracker competition.

The 15 hole Bowmaker competition is held in conjuction with the Ladies section with ten teams made up of one woman and two men.

In benign conditions, most of the teams scored around the mid 60s and it was no surprise when two sides returned the same score of 66.

The respective club captains, Rosa Atkinson and Alan Davis, combined with Geoff Dean to return a score of 64 which was enough to secure third place.

However some impressive golf by Chris Burrows and Hannah Jacobson saw their respective teams home by two points, the former taking the silver salver by virtue of a better back 9.

The men’s captain gave a welcome speech to the ladies section after a buffet meal, and announced that the event had raised £180 for charity which will be shared between the Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance and the prostate cancer charities.

Result: 1 Chris Burrows, Ray Wilton & Mike Burt 66pts; 2 Hannah Jacobson, Bob Barrow & John Pearce 66pts; 3 Rosa Atkinson, Alan Davis & Geoff Dean 64pts.

A total of 36 members attended a Bowmaker variation tournament on Wednesday. Again the golfers took advantage of near perfect conditions to return better than par scores.

In a one sided competition, Barry Singleton led his side to an emphatic victory by seven clear points over the team led by John Wallis, with Gordon Bareham’s trio claiming third place.

Result: 1 Barry Singleton, Richard Forster & Colin Ireland 84pts; 2 John Wallis, Mike Hone & Richard Hall 77pts; 3 Gordon Bareham, Brian Marsh & Keith Harper 76pts.

A rain-affected day on Friday reduced the field to 18 players who took part in a three man combined Stableford tournament with a yellow ball variation.

With all players contributing on all holes, some heavy scores wereproduced, with the improving Colin Ireland leading his team to victory by ten clear points over their nearest rivals.

Result: 1 Colin Ireland, Bob Barrow & Barrie Heath 140pts; 2 Bert Robinson, Mike Hone & Brian Anderson 130pts; 3 Andy Beale, Alan Dowley & Jerry Stephens 121pts.
