CYCLING: West on the right track for Chard Wheelers
6:00am Wednesday 30th October 2013 in Sport
JOE West, an Under-14 rider with McKinlays 1st Chard Wheelers, is making a big impression at the Newport velodrome in South Wales.
West is very new to velodrome track racing having only passed his accreditation a few weeks ago.
But last Tuesday night in the Winter track league, making only his second appearance, West took an excellent second place and followed up with two wins, being cheered across the line by a large Wheelers contingent.
Victory in the 1,500 metre Dash was followed by a very strong win in the points race, which is an endurance event where riders accumulate points for sprints during and at the end of the race.
His performances underline his promise as a good all rounder on the track as well as a fast emerging talent in road and circuit racing.
There are now six Chard riders regularly riding the winter league. Rowan Ellis, one of the youngest riders competing, made his track racing debut. He kept up well with the pace and is already starting to find his ‘track legs’.
Rob Hogg rode well to take three podiums in the ‘A’ league.
In the South Western regional cyclo-cross championships held at Stover School near Newton Abbot, several 1CW riders put in top performances.
Max Hinds secured a hard-fought second place in the youth race while Imogen Jones did likewise in the Under 12 Girls.
Evan Richards battled to fifth place against a large field in the Under 12 Boys while his dad Gavin finished a highly creditable tenth out of 80 riders in the veterans’ race.
Chard Wheelers host their own Cyclo-cross event at Holyrood Academy on Sunday, November 17.
There will be plenty of opportunity for any new riders to have a go at racing – you just need a working mountain bike and a helmet.
