MOTOR SPORT: Le Coadou overcomes Regency rally drama
9:42am Friday 18th October 2013 in Sport
BROADWAY driver Gary Le Coadou maintained his concentration after a four hour stoppage to win the annual Regency Stages Rally at the Bath & West Showground.
The event, which was supported by 66 crews, was a qualifying round of three regional championships and consisted of eight tarmac stages (including two night time stages) over a distance of approximately 45 miles.
Le Coadou and co-driver Paul Hollingham were holding a 30 second advantage when the event was halted after a car left the slippery Shepton Mallet surface, injuring three spectators.
Fortunately the injuries sustained were not serious and those taken to hospital were all released that evening.
When the event restarted, with the sun was now shining and road surface dry, Le Coadou and Hollingham continued to set the pace, setting a further four fastest stage times. This gave them a healthy advantage over Josh Payton and Marcus Mizen who were now holding second place and allowed Le Coadou to ‘back off’ slightly for the night stages and bring the Corolla WRC home to victory.
The event marked an end of an era for the winning duo as Hollingham has decided to take a break after 20 years in the sport and a seven year partnership with Le Coadou.
Also contesting the race was Martyn England from Ilminster in his Mitsubishi Evo9.
