GOLF: Team led by John Wallis takes Windwhistle Seniors' Bowmaker
5:56pm Monday 30th September 2013 in Sport
A BUSY week for the Windwhistle Seniors began on Monday with 45 members attending a three man Bowmaker competition.
In the damp conditions with no run on the ball, players found scoring difficult. The outcome was that four teams took the lead early on and maintained steady progress throughout.
After 17 holes, the scores were level, and it appeared that there would be a four way tie. However, the team led by John Wallis made birdies on the final hole to take the spoils by 1 point.
Result: 1 John Wallis, Bryan Frost & Bob Hollingworth 75pts; 2 Colin Williams, Keith Harper & Sid Crisp 74pts; 3 Bob Barrow, Barry Singleton & Nick Hill 74pts; 4 Barrie Heath, Nobby Hodder & Bob White 74pts.
On Wednesday, the Seniors held the September qualifying stableford competition. Once again, the conditions ensured that no player scored better than par. In Division 1 there was a four way tie with all players on even par.
Trevor Dobson emerged as winner by virtue of a better back six, having equal scores on the back nine.
Result: Division 1 – 1 Trevor Dobson (36pts), 2 Mike Burt (36), 3 Chris Basterfield (36). Division 2 – 1 John Pearce (35pts) 2 Mike Cox (35), 3 Mick Aldridge (34).
The match team travelled to play against the Taunton & Pickeridge Seniors. They halved three games but lost the other three for an overall loss of 4½ to 1½.
Results: Alan Davis & Mike Hone halved with Potter & Farrell; Mike Light & Barry Singleton halved with Moore & Stokes; Norman Markby & Andy Beale lost to Thomas & Ferris by 4&3; Bob Hollingworth & Alan Chance halved with Boyce & Roach; Adrian Wells & Nobby Hodder lost to Cottell & Davidge by 5&3; Stuart Pope & Richard Hall lost to Capel & Cooper by 4&3.
On Friday, the match team entertained the Seniors from Long Sutton. Despite a gallant effort from the home side, tiredness took its toll. After a loss in game one, Bob Hollingwoth & Keith Harper halved the second game which was followed by two further successes. A loss at game five saw the two sides level at 2½ games each.
All eyes were on the final pairings and eventually Long Sutton triumphed on the 16th hole to steal victory.
Results: Alan Chance & Stuart Pope lost to Butcher & Gingell by 3&2; Bob Hollingworth & Keith Harper halved with Capps & Lancey; Mike Light & Keith Blanchflower beat Lawrence & Packett by 3&2; Barrie Heath & Nobby Hodder beat Tucker & Manning by 2&1; John McOmish & Barry Singleton lost to Whitehead & Stone by 3&2; Mike King & Rod Drayton lost to Dennes & Williams by 4&3.
A total of 36 Seniors formed 18 teams in a 2 Ball Texas Scramble earlier in the day and in beautiful autumnal weather made the most of the conditions by scoring well.
A closely fought match saw Colin Ireland’s pair win by a margin of 2.6 shots over Geoff Dean’s team who just ousted Brian Marsh’s side into third place.
Results: 1 Colin Ireland & Bob Barrow 66.4; 2 Geoff Dean & Chris Basterfield 69.0; 3 Brian Marsh & John Bonney 70.0.½
