CYCLING: Wheelers' time triallists make most of conditions
5:00pm Friday 27th September 2013 in Sport
IN-FORM duo Tom Aliban and Dave Moffett led the way for 1st Chard Wheelers in the Yeovil CC 10 mile Time Trial which produced some very quick times in near-perfect conditions.
Aliban was timed at 21mins 6secs while Moffett completed the course in 21m 22s as the club turned out in force with 13 entrants.
These two have been racing particularly well all season with some great results.
Dean Ward was third Wheeler on 22m 13s, just ahead of Nigel Ware who stopped the clock at 22m 56s.
Ware was the club time trial champion two years ago and proved that's he’s still got the legs.
Under 16 rider Oli Cooper recorded a personal best 10TT of 23m 10s and seems to be getting faster every time he races.
The next quickest Chard riders were Mark German (23m 29s), Dave Lyons (23m 48s), ‘Buster’ Lawrence (24m 34s) and Dave Moran who clocked (24m 48s). ‘Doc’ John Beaven rode a very creditable 25m 5s.
Dave Lane who is one of the club’s top TT racers, didn’t ride as he was taking part in a Triathlon at Langport but his 16 year old son Adrian did take part and recorded an excellent 25m 23s.
Super Veteran John Trout pulled out one of his best rides this year with a time of 28m 04s, an excellent showing for a rider in his 70s.
No less than eight Wheelers set season personal best times – Aliban, Moffett, Ward, German, Cooper, Moran, Lane and Trout.
As the Tour Of Britain hit Sidmouth on Thursday the local club promoted some town centre Criterium style races for South-West riders.
Jacob Board was victorious by a good margin in the Under-16 race as was Rowan Ellis in the Under-12 event.
Ellis has hit top form recently and the Sidmouth win was his fifth of the year.
Jack Webb (Under-10s) took second place with a very swift ride. He is another youth Wheeler who has been developing and improving all season.
Board also raced in the men’s category 2/3/4 race and gained another top ten finish in eight place despite the relative gearing handicap he had against the men riders.
