WINDWHISTLE Seniors devote the third week in October to The Cyder Cup which takes the form of three competitions over three days.

The captain’s team is challenged by a team put together by the vice-captain. A total of 44 members attended the Monday meeting which was a foursomes with 11 points at stake.

Cliff Medcraff & Andy Beale drew first blood for the vice captain, beating Malcolm Toy & Ken Trott by 6&5.

This was nullified in the second game, and with the third match ending in a half, parity was restored. The following two matches were shared, but a spate of wins by the vice-captain’s team, with only one match being halved, meant they won 8-3.

The challenge was resumed on Wednesday when ten games were played in the 4Ball Better Ball format.

The first four pairings shared the honours with both teams scoring two victories. Alan Chance & Mike Horne swung the event in favour of the vice captain’s team when they won game five. This was immediately nullified when Maurice Arnold & Bryan Frost won game six. This was followed by a well- contested match between Norman Markby & Brian Anderson who halved with Geoff Dean & Adrian Wells to balance the day. However, the final three games were won by the vice-captain’s team who took the day’s honours by 6½ games to 3½.

On Friday, the final leg saw 42 Seniors play 21 singles matches, and with the contest standing at 14½ to 6½, the captain needed a Ryder Cup-style comback by winning by a margin of 9 games to retain the cup.

In the event, it was the vice captain’s team which managed to win 13-8. This emphatic victory meant the vice-captain took the honours by the score of 27½-14½.

Leading players were vice captain Alan Chance and Ted Bryden who both secured the maximum of three points.
