MICHAEL Anthony Brown of Holly Terrace, Chard, died at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, on June 27. He was aged 66.

Michael was born at Taunton in 1941, the son of Jack and Queenie Brown, and moved to Chard in 1945, where his father owned a butchers' shop in Holyrood Street.

One of five sons and brother to Edwin, David, Trevor and the late Terry, he went to Ilminster Grammar School and, on leaving, worked for his father in the family business. When his father formed Holyrood Car Sales (Chard) Ltd with his partner John Butcher, and later Marine Sales (Chard) Ltd, he continued working for them in the sale and servicing of powerboats. When the company moved to Taunton as Marine Sales (Taunton) Ltd, he became a full partner in the business.

He later moved to Ilminster and took over Ditton Street Garage with partners John and David Butcher. After finishing with business, he spent the last ten years before retiring as a long distance lorry driver and enjoyed this part of his life, travelling the country and sometimes the continent.

Michael was very popular, outgoing and sociable, who enjoyed the company of his family and the many friends he made over the years. He was very generous and known to be always ready to help a friend.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The funeral service, conducted by Stella Jackson, assisted by Sue Andrews, was held at St Mary's Parish Church, Chard, on July 6. It featured the hymns The Old Rugged Cross and Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer. The service in Chard was followed by burial at Taunton.
