MISS Agnes Hocken of High Street, Chard, died at Chard and District Hospital on May 13. She was aged 90.

One of seven children, Agnes spent all her life living at Combe St Nicholas and Chard. Although she never had children of her own, she had 14 nieces and nephews to whom she was devoted. Her working life was spent as a secretary with architects Symes and Madge, and Anthony Hollow.

She undertook voluntary work for Chard Hospital League of Friends for 34 years, the Blood Transfusion Service for 20 years, the Red Cross for 15 years and the Chard Blind Club. She was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the town "in appreciation of outstanding voluntary service and assistance to the local community."

Her funeral, conducted by Mrs Sylvia Murphy, took place at Taunton Deane Crematorium on May 21. The service was followed by interment of ashes in her parents grave at Combe St Nicholas on May 24.

Also represented at the service were Chard Blind Club, the Somerset Association for the Blind, and Chard Hospital League of Friends. Also present were many friends.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by A.J. Wakely and Sons, 45 Holyrood Street, Chard.
