CARNIVAL season kicked off in style at the weekend with a successful event in South Petherton.

A total of 28 entries took part in the annual carnival on Saturday, with an array of floats, walkers, majorettes, vintage cars and bands.

The evening stayed dry, and the crowds lined the streets for one of the most well attended carnivals in recent years in terms of entries and spectators.

Among the entries taking part were local favourites the Brewers Arms carnival club with their impressive Wizard of Oz themed float, which also won best music.

Newcomers Eclipse Juniors were taking part in their first ever carnival with their entry You Arghh are A Pirate, which earned them first in the feature category.

Several local groups including the schools, the cricket club and brownies took part with their creative walking entries, and the 2nd South Petherton scouts brought out a float depicting a variety of flying machines.

Several carnival veterans also took part including Roger Muspratt-Hamilton, Spirit CC and Chipmunks CC.

One of the evening’s judges and member of two carnival clubs, Luke Bennett, said: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Everyone who took part did a fantastic job.

“It is lovely to see all the local groups get involved in this wonderful community event. Thank you to everyone who was involved with putting on the carnival, all the entries who took part, and for everyone who came along to support it.”
