PUPILS at Neroche Primary School were called in to help fight a "fire" recently when a travelling historian visited the school.

Year one and two students were taught to use 17th century water pumps to help fight an imaginary blaze as they learnt about the great Fire of London from historian, Mr Stock.

Headteacher Connel Boyle commented “Watching the children get immersed in history is a wonder to observe.

"Watching the children show me metre long nails and grappling irons, describing how the Londoners had to pull walls and buildings down was fascinating.

"Letting children get hands on experiences such a powerful tool to create enthusiasm and enjoyment in learning.”

Jasmine, 6, said “It was so hard to push the pump hard enough to get enough water out. Putting out a real fire must be so hard.”

In addition to their practical 17th century fire fighting skills, the children also experienced trying to write a Samuel Pepys diary entry.

Year two pupil Sam said: “The quill is really scratchy, you can spill ink really easily.”
