Victory riders in Vietnam

8:01am Monday 18th December 2006

SUPPORTERS of the Magdalen Project in Winsham have returned tired but enlightened from their mammoth cycle challenge across Vietnam.

Centre manager Catherine Rands and self-employed Bernard Genge undertook a 3,500km charity cycle last month to raise funds for the Young Carers programme at the centre, which promotes respite care for young carers.

The charity cycle was organised by Thorncombe-based company Across the Divide with a group of nine volunteers taking part to raise funds for different charities across the country.

Bernard, who had put in months of training before the event, said it was tough but well worth it.

He said: "Forests and mountains make up most of the land, and a lot of the route is very challenging emotionally and physically."

As well as cycling across the country the volunteers also got to experience some of the culture and see what life is like first hand, visiting different tribes and staying in different villages along the way.

Bernard said: "For many of us on the trek we couldn't help comparing it to our own society where in comparison we're rich and materially have so much more, but it appears that we have a lot less contentment, satisfaction and fulfilment.

"They're very proud about their heritage and culture.

"Their respect for each other and all who enter the country is humbling."

Both Bernard and Catherine managed to complete the challenge, and believe the task was well worthwhile both personally and for the charity.

Bernard said: " My advice to anyone ever thinking of embarking on such an adventure would simply be to do it."

The pair are holding an evening for supporters and sponsors to view photographs from the trek and for a talk on their experiences.
