THE winners of South Somerset District Council’s annual South Somerset Sport Awards evening have been announced following the awards event.
Local people nominated 74 volunteers, coaches and sporting individuals for awards.
The nominees attended an awards evening at Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford including a guest appearance by Nigel Redman, former British and Irish Lions and England rugby player.
The event was supported by AgustaWestland and each award was sponsored by local businesses and organisations.
Winners of South Somerset Sport Awards 2010 were:
Coach of the Year – Jane Bell, head coach at Gryphon West Gym Club; Rookie Coach of the Year (sponsored by Midwest Radio) – Edgar Herridge, junior coach and captain of the Sunday XI at Long Sutton Cricket Club; Junior Performer of the Year – Daniel Liu, swimmer at Yeovil District Swimming Club; Senior Performer of the Year – Nicola Morgan, swimmer and triathlete at Yeovil District Swimming Club; Junior Club of the Year – Merriott Youth Football Club; Senior Club of the Year – Yeovil Olympiads Athletics Club (Senior Men); Junior Sports Leader of the Year – William Blackmore, assistant coach at Shepton Mallet and Bruton Hockey Club; AgustaWestland Volunteer of the Year – Steve Elliott, vice-chairman of Wessex Wizards Triathlon Club; Lifetime Services to Sport – William Whistlecroft MBE, president, coach and official at Yeovil Olympiads Athletics Club.
