'Face of SURE' Eric Saffin steps down

TRIBUTES have been paid to the achievements of Eric Saffin, known as ‘the face of SURE’ (the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment appeal), who stepped down from his role as treasurer this week due to ill health.

The County Gazette-backed appeal raises money to kit out the Beacon Cancer Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital and in recent years Eric Saffin, who is in his 80s, has served as the charity’s main figurehead.

Chairman and founder Barrie Palmer said: “Eric was well qualified for the role as he had suffered from various cancers over the years and in particular one which eventually cost him an eye and various other problems.

“He revelled in taking the lead, giving talks, receiving donations, managing accounts, writing thank you letters, meeting people, negotiating with Musgrove Park Hospital and much more. He became the face of SURE.

“Even with the changes to his appearance due to the numerous operations, he wasn’t put off; he continued to help make the success that SURE is today.

"He will be greatly missed and we all wish him well.”

“As his dear wife, Sonja, who sadly passed away in 2011 after a long illness, told me in 2003, Eric needed a project to keep him busy.”

Eric told the County Gazette: “I’m happy I helped to change people’s lives by improving the way cancer treatment is delivered in Taunton.”

Roy Hole, who will take over as treasurer, said: “It is due to the wonderful support of our community that SURE continues to flourish.”

Alex Cameron, editor of the County Gazette, added: “Eric Saffin is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met.

"His tireless dedication to the cause, perseverance through adversity and kindness of spirit stand as an example to all of us.

“It has been a pleasure to work with him in our Be SURE to Help campaign and we send him our best wishes as he steps down.”
