This shocking video shows how an elderly motorist drove the wrong way down the M5 - for 13 minutes.

Horrified motorists and passengers called 999 after witnessing the Renault Captur driving against traffic in the fast lane.

Ocado delivery driver Tim Jones, 28, captured the footage as he approached junction 20 for Clevedon while heading home to Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.

It was first seen at 11.10pm - police officers finally stopped the driver at around 11.23pm.

Two pensioners were inside the vehicle and no arrests were made, police said.

Father-of-one Tim said: "It's miraculous that nobody was injured and I'm surprised there wasn't a fatality.

"I am also surprised by how long it took police to stop the driver because when I rang they were already aware of the situation.

"It makes you wonder how the motorist has kept their licence in the first place driving dangerously like that."

Other vehicles were using the busy motorway's middle lane when the car passed. Mr Jones, 28, said he thought its bright headlights were from the vehicle in front.

He added that traffic was "steady" due to a number of people returning home from Bristol's Balloon Fiesta.

One driver said on Facebook: "I met this head on too in the raised section and had to swerve (fortunately the vehicles I was overtaking saw it and pulled over to the hard shoulder and lane one so I could pull over to the middle).

"Reported to 999 and operator said there had been many calls."

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a driver travelling the wrong way down the M5 motorway between junction 21 and 19.

"The driver was stopped by 11.23pm. We had several calls from the public informing us of the incident."
