A MAN has died and a woman is in a "critical but stable condition" following a road traffic crash on Boxing Day.

Police are appealing for witnesses to Monday's incident at Sparkford Hill at about 1.50pm.

A BMW was travelling in the direction of the A303 when it crossed the centre of the road on a bend, according to police.

It hit an embankment before returning to the road where it collided with another car and then flipped over onto its roof.

Two occupants from the BMW were taken to Southmead Hospital, in Bristol, with serious injuries.

The front seat passenger - a man - sadly died during the evening.

The other injured passenger -a woman - remains in a critical but stable condition.

The driver of the BMW was taken to Yeovil District Hospital, where he was treated for head and arm injuries and then released.

The driver of the other car – a Vauxhall Vivaro - and the front seat passenger also received treatment at the YDH. A back seat passenger was unhurt.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "Collision investigators are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, particularly shortly before it happened.

"Anyone with information is asked to call the collision investigation unit on 101, quoting reference CI/257/16 1220."
