A TAUNTON woman reckons helping others saved her life.

Elaine Hodgson, who felt like giving up when she suffered from anxiety and depression, said volunteering for the Healthwatch watchdog had been a wonderful experience.

She said: “It gives me a purpose, a reason to get up in the morning and it is good to feel needed again.

“When you have suffered from anxiety and depression it is very easy to give up, stay indoors and feel sorry for yourself.”

Elaine is on the executive group for Healthwatch Somerset and is the lead mental health representative.

She also work on the Enter and View team that visits health and social care providers and spends time talking to service users and staff.

“Working with Healthwatch Somerset has increased my confidence and taught me so much about how to represent and support others,” added Elaine.

“I’d encourage anyone in my position to think about volunteering – it can be a life saver.”
