YOUNG adults caught watching TV without a licence are being warned they face a fine of up to £1,000.

TV Licensing has sent out the message after it emerged that 24 18- to 25-year-olds in Taunton and 227 across Somerset were caught last year.

Research by TV Licensing shows 10% of undergraduates believe they will get away with watching live TV without a licence, while 24% think they won’t be found out watching live on a computer, laptop or mobile device.

TV Licensing South West spokesman Richard Chapman said: “On average, students own three devices capable of streaming live TV, so it’s important they understand the law when it comes to being correctly licensed.

“Watching live TV on any device is illegal without a TV licence and could result in prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.

“If you’re a student and you’re worried about paying for a TV licence, get in touch.

“We know some people struggle to pay which is why we have many payment options available to spread the cost in smaller, more manageable chunks.”
