SECURITY cameras may be in-stalled to deter yobs after more vandalism at the Millennium Hall in Seavington St Michael.
Parish councillors and members of Seavington Playing Field Association are dismayed problems continue at the hall despite their appeals to village youngsters to behave.
Now they are considering installing CCTV at the hall because of the problems and the rising cost of replacing damaged items.
CCTV would not be cheap and residents were warned in the latest edition of the Seavingtons' News magazine that £3,000 would have to be added to the parish council's precept.
That would mean all households would have to pay an extra £15 in the parish portion of the council tax.
As the council's precept has already been set for 2008-09 it would probably be added to the precept for the following financial year.
The Seavingtons' News editor, David Froome, said that although loutish behaviour' could not be condoned, he felt more youth facilities were needed in the area.
"It is disappointing that vandalism by our local young people is still proving to be a major problem in the Millennium Hall," he said.
"While not in any way condoning loutish behaviour, or the parents who do not care what their youngsters get up to, the need for youth facilities exists in every community and was specifically identified two years ago in our village plan."

Think logically, there is a very poor bus service to Seavington, it is cold most nights... these vandals are right on the doorstep! See what time the vandalism is taking place and just get a local bobby down that way every now and again! These crowds of kids who hang around these places should be sent home if they have no real reason to be out at nights wandering around - or at least questioned and names taken!

Tell me, in the distant past, were there more facilities in Seavington for youngsters to do, than exist now? Is vandalism of the Millennium Hall a long-established tradition?
Someone feel free to correct me, but I guess that the link between "lack of youth facilities" and vandalism is a trendy new excuse. OK, so it's desirable and a good thing for youngsters to be provided with more facilities-great if it happens!
I'm in danger of being classed as an old git here so please excuse the use of "when I were a lad" and "back in my day".
I have never vandalised anything in my life and I can't remember any of my contemporaries doing so either. However nor do I recall having any "youth facilities"-I once remember going to a youth club, for one night only but it wasn't as exciting as doing my homework (honest!), playing footy, rugby, cricket, going swimming, chasing girls, riding my pushbike, going fishing; it didn't earn me money like doing a paper round or sticking up skittles. Frankly I was too knackered to go and vandalise my local village hall.
So where's the excuse for vandals to be pooping in their own nest?
In regards to ALL the 200 or so households each being asked to contribute £15 precept to pay for CCTV, I have a "trendy" new suggestion, anyone with me? Why not levy a precept of, say, £150 on every Seavington household with youngsters living therein? This would soon cause the unfortunate recipients of the £150 bills, those with good kids, to identify the vandals.
Job done!
