THE Ilminster in Bloom group is urging keen gardeners to do their bit' to give the town a massive splash of floral colour this summer.
Bloom organisers have just announced details of its annual competition and are now asking residents and businesses to take part in the contest.
There are categories for large and small gardens, and hanging baskets, window boxes and troughs. Pubs, hotels and guest houses can also take part, as well as shops, offices, banks and businesses.
Residential homes, warden-controlled schemes and retirement housing complexes are also invited to take part where there are communal gardens.
The competition, sponsored by Gooch and Housego in association with Ilminster Town Council, is free to enter and judging is on August 10.
A trophy, provided by Bilby's at Minstrels, will be awarded for the best commercial display and the Archie Gooch Cup will go to the overall winner of the competition.
Members of the council's open spaces committee last week agreed to spend £700 on providing new self-watering flower troughs for the Strawberry Bank area of Ilminster.
They also agreed that efforts were needed to improve the flower containers around the church after Cllr Gordon Childs described them as an eyesore'.
