A PERSON has been airlifted to hospital with a head injury and Staple Hill is closed in both directions after a crash. 

The incident happened at about 8am today (November 8) on Staple Hill near Stable Cottage in Buckland St Mary. 

Paramedics rushed to the scene with two rapid response vehicles, one ambulance and the air ambulance to help the injured. 

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service, said: "Two patients were treated at the scene. 

"One was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with minor injuries by road ambulance. 

"The second patient suffered a head injury was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for treatment."

Firefighters from Chard and Ilminster were called to the scene at 8.20am today (November 8) after reports that one person was trapped.

After liaising with ambulance and police, crews confirmed two people were trapped in the vehicles. 

One of the victims was seriously injured and needed to be freed from the vehicle as quickly as possible to go to hospital. 

The person was air lifted to hospital. 

Crews then freed the second person from the vehicle with hydralic cutting equipment and small tools. 

A traffic update at around 5.30pm said: "Staple Hill both ways closed, heavy traffic due to accident, two vehicles involved at Rackley Lane.

"The road remains closed near Stable Cottage following an accident first reported at around 9.20am this morning.

"The closure is likely to remain in place into the night."

The road has now reopened.
