EMERGENCY services have been called out after a tree branch fell onto electric cables near Ilminster, causing dangerous sparking.

Two fire engines, police and Western Power Distribution were called to the incident on Shelway Lane, Barrington shortly after 1.30pm today (June 2).

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service said: "The Fire Service were called to reports of an electrical cables which were sparking due to a tree branch which had fallen down onto the cables.

"Fire Control mobilised two appliances from Martock and Ilminster to attend this incident.

"Upon arrival crews confirmed a high powered electric cable which had been hit by a falling tree had snapped and was hanging in tree tops.

"Crews cordoned off the area for safety reasons. Crews remained in attendance until Western Power engineers arrived.

"Crews also requested the police to attend to assist with traffic control and cordons in place for public safety.

"Western Power have now isolated the electric supply."
