ILMINSTER could be set for an election after a town councillor announced he would be stepping down from his position.

Cllr Fred Albin stood down from Ilminster Town Council at the start of this year, prompting the town council to ask for nominations to fill the vacancy.

A spokesman for Ilminster Town Council said: “I have declared a casual vacancy (arising from the resignation of Cllr Albin).

"Unless 10 people contact the Proper Officer at South Somerset District Council by February 9, requesting an election, the council will proceed to co-opt a new councillor.”

Requests for an election must be submitted in writing to The Proper Officer, South Somerset District Council, Council Offices, Brympton Way, Yeovil, Somerset, BA20 2HT.

Cllr Albin’s decision to stand down follows three resignations from the town council last year – Sophie Storey, Rose Neave and Carol Goodall.

He was one of nine Voice for Ilminster town council election candidates who stood for election in 2015 as part of a campaign to shake up the town council.

Councillors Robert Drayton, John Fagan, Julie Fowler, Don Kinder, Stuart Shepherd, and Tony Walker were all also part of the group.
