A MAN accused of deliberately driving his 4x4 car at his partner’s ex-husband as the other man waited in a lay-by to collect children has elected to stand trial at Taunton Crown Court.
James Compton is alleged to have driven his Land Rover Discover into a lay-by off the A303 between Ilminster and South Petherton, allegedly knocking the complainant off his feet and injuring his foot.
Compton, 39, of New Buildings, Crediton, denied a charge of dangerous driving on June 19 when he appeared before Somerset magistrates.
Prosecutor Julyan Stephens said there had allegedly been an exchange of heated text messages between the defendant and the complainant in the lead-up to the incident.
Compton was then alleged to have deliberately driven at the man injuring his foot and leaving him in a state of shock.
The court was told that Compton denied any deliberate intention to drive at the alleged victim, and elected to stand trial at Taunton Crown Court.
The magistrates adjourned the case until January 3, when the defendant must appear before a preliminary hearing. He was given unconditional bail.
