THE Ilminster branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has donated almost £5,000 to two local causes after a recent fundraising drive.

The branch donated £2,250 to the Dunkirk Memorial House near Taunton and £2,250 to the Somerset Legion House in Weston-super-Mare.

Both beneficiaries are managed by the RBL, and offer care and support to ex-servicemen and women.

Dunkirk Memorial House is one of six RBL run care homes and provides a place for people to live as independently as possible, and where residents look out for one another.

It is set in 17 acres of landscaped gardens, and accommodates up to 90 residents.

Somerset Legion House is one of four Legion Break Centres, which the RBL runs to offer short-term breaks to individuals and families in need of some respite.

The aim of the break service is to provide beneficiaries with a rest or escape from any life-problems they may be experiencing, including illness, bereavement or social isolation.

Tony Moore, treasurer of the branch, presented the two cheques to the homes after members launched a fundraising drive during Ilminster’s Lions Fete and Party on the Park, and from a number of generous donations.

Speaking after receiving the donations, Jacqui Ibbetson, who received the cheque on behalf of Somerset legion House, said: “This generous donation will help us to provide the extra resources that help to make a break at Somerset legion House such a wonderful experience for our visitors.”

Anne Lewin, home manager for Dunkirk Memorial House, said: “This money will help to enhance the quality of life experienced by our residents in this superb facility.”

Ilminster’s RBL meet on the fourth Monday of every month, except August and December, at the Shrubbery Hotel and are appealing for new members.

Anyone can join the Legion, to become part of a national movement that supports the work that the Legion does on a day-to-day basis to help our beneficiaries.

Membership costs just £16.00 per year, plus a small local administration fee.
