FROM cheerleaders to Minnie Mouse and from cowboys to Captain America the children at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster dressed up as all things American on their special USA Day.
As an introduction to this term’s topics in English and geography the young children had a fun-filled day starting to find out about the United States and its geography and some of its history.
Then, as part of their work in English, they started learning the story of 'Brer Rabbit and the tar baby'. The drizzly weather did not dampen their spirits when they had hotdogs and songs round the campfire with Forest School teacher Vernon Higgins.
Literacy co-ordinator Andrea Jones said: “We find having a 'WOW' day to start of each new story or topic really engages the children's interest and makes it memorable.
“It gives a lovely springboard from which to launch into their new learning. The staff as well as the children dress up and we have a really great time.
“It’s well worth the time and effort involved to try to make the curriculum fun for the children.”
