ILMINSTER Town FC has received some great feedback about its first ever bonfire and fireworks party on Sunday – but it was certainly not the first time that Ilminsterians have got together and enjoyed the warmth of a giant bonfire.

Jim Sainsbury, of the Heritage of the Ile Trust, which is preserving photographs and postcards of old Ilminster for generations to come, has dug out some old pictures showing bonfires in the town from the past.

The trust has a new website at heritageoftheile.co.uk and will be adding new pictures from its collection.

But is already a fascinating look at old Ilminster.

The group was formed in 1976 by a group of local Ilminster people who were concerned to preserve the past of the area for the benefit of the future.

The Trust is managed by an enthusiastic body of volunteers who collect and collate photographs that are given to them.

The collection now totals over 4,000 images and the Trust also welcomes donations of other historical records relating to the area.
