CHILDREN at Neroche Primary School at Broadway were challenged to go to their local library and take part in the Somerset “Record Breakers” reading event during August and September.

In 2014, a total of 50 Neroche school children took part in the challenge and read 250 books between them, but this year they have surpassed themselves with 75 pupils becoming bookworms and reading a whopping 450-plus books!

The children were rewarded with certificates and medals and the school hopes it will inspire them to become avid readers in the future.

Among the pupils, brothers Oliver and Jacob Crouch, said: “We love reading and winning these medals was awesome.”

Neroche Primary School headteacher, Connel Boyle, said: “We must never underestimate the power of reading for pleasure.

“The impacts of our parents and grandparents supporting our Ilminster Library and our children’s reading is incredible.

“As a school we are not an island, we cannot alone inspire our children to excellence – it is the whole community together that makes the impact. Thank you so much to the dedicated staff at our local Ilminster library.”
